8 Days Serengeti Migration Safari

8 Days

Overview

Serengeti wildebeest migration is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Africa, the annual great migration of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem will undoubtedly send a shiver down the spine of even the most hardened safari-goer.

This safari is designed to capture the best of the annual migration – from June to October – when the herds move up through the western corridor into the northern Serengeti where they face two major obstacles – the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. Depending on where they are, your days will be spent either marvelling at vast columns comprising thousands of beasts as they march steadily northward, or perhaps enjoying the raw thrill of a river crossing.

By basing ourselves in two locations – firstly at a semi-mobile camp, which moves several times a year to move with the herds, and then moving on to a permanent lodge near the Mara river – we give ourselves the best chance of being close enough to the action to guarantee high drama, without stinting on luxury and comfort.

Itinerary

You will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where we will meet you to welcome you on your Tanzania safari. You will then be transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge (45 mins by road) where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings as you prepare for the exciting safari ahead.
The lodge is situated in one of the largest coffee plantations in Tanzania, and has views to the unmistakeable silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro itself.

This morning, after an early breakfast, we will transfer you to the nearby Arusha airport for the 0725hrs scheduled departure to the Serengeti.
Landing at the airstrip nearest to the camp, you will be met by your private guide and vehicle and transferred to the Serengeti Safari Camp. This semi-nomadic camp moves several times a year to keep up with the migratory herds as they make their epic journey northwards, so it could be pitched in one of a number of different locations, depending on the time of year. In June it may still be found in the western corridor, where great columns of wildebeests move north as one, and between July and October it is more likely to be occupying a quiet corner of the northern Serengeti, close to the rivers for dramatic river crossing experiences.
It will not move whilst you are in it, but this camp covers hundreds of miles every year, along a route which the herds have travelled for centuries.

Every day you are at Serengeti Safari Camp, you have exclusive use of a private vehicle and guide, meaning you are at liberty to set your own itinerary, at your own pace.
You can enjoy as much, or as little, game viewing as you like. Rise early before sunrise, and depart with picnics at dawn for long days moving with the herds across the plains, returning only in time for ice-cold sundowners. Or pop out for short forays and return to camp in between game drives to linger over delicious lunches served at camp. It is entirely up to you – which is what makes it so great.

On your second full day exploring the area around camp, your private guide and vehicle will help you plan your time, catering specifically to your needs.
Armed with flasks of coffee, you might want to head out looking for predators. With this many herd animals around, it will not be long before you find them. Cheetah are common in the Serengeti and it is rare to go on a game drive which does not include lion sightings. Driving at dawn, you may also stand a chance of spotting an elusive leopard, or perhaps a civet, serval or African wild cat, returning from a night hunting.
Alternatively, pack some sundowners and head out to an elevated spot on a kopje or overlooking one of the rivers, and enjoy the sunset as you watch the wildlife – an excellent way to end the day.

This morning after breakfast at camp, you will depart for the nearby airstrip a short flight to Kogatende airstrip in northern Serengeti. You will be met at Kogatende by the lodge vehicle and transferred to the lodge.
Lamai nestles on a rocky kopje, a few miles from the Mara River, with panoramic views of the rolling woodland and bush surrounding the camp. You will arrive in time for lunch, after which you can relax at camp before embarking on the afternoon’s activities.

Your lodge occupies one of the most dramatic areas across the entire Serengeti. Teeming with wildlife between July to October, this area is perfect for guests looking to have their magical ‘migration experience’.
The camp is unique in being able to offer professionally guided walking safaris around the area – which lends itself well to exploration on foot. The woodland cover, small valleys, meandering rivers and rocky kopjes provide excellent cover for getting close to the game in the area.
And those who put in the hours on game drives will find them sure to pay dividends. Excursions at dawn or dusk, with your private guide and vehicle, will be sure to yield a high predator count. The lodge is also closely located to the Mara River, site of many an epic river crossing moment as thousands of wildebeest take the plunge into crocodile-filled waters, with seemingly not a care for the consequences.
Alternatively, there is no harm in putting your feet up and enjoying the view from the lodge, either on the private verandah of your room or at the lodge pool. After all, you are on holiday.

Today you will spend more time exploring the lush, rolling grasslands and tree-lined watercourses around the northern Serengeti. And thanks to having your own vehicle and guide throughout your time at Lamai, you can set your own itinerary, and be as busy or as relaxed as you like.
So you can be out all day, equipped with bush picnics and a coolbox filled with drinks. Or you can base yourself at the lodge, immersed in the pool in between game drives, and pop out for short excursions on foot or in the vehicle. Set your own pace – and experience your own Serengeti – without having to put up with strangers in your car, or having to compromise on what you want to see.
And there is so much to see! Migratory herds and epic river crossings aside, the resident game at Lamai provides a cornucopia of wildlife delights, with zebra, topi, gazelles, impala, buffalo and giraffe to add to the plains game. Lion and cheetah are common, and the elusive leopard stalks the rocks and river lines.

This morning, after a relaxed breakfast at camp, we depart for nearby Kogatende airstrip with picnics. There we catch the 1130hrs scheduled flight to Kilimanjaro airport, landing at 1300hrs. Upon arrival, check in for your international departure flight leaving later today.
